Where the glamorous come for a Dolce Vita stay…
As you swirl up the winding road past all the gardens you know you are in for a very special stay. Refined luxury in an Italian garden type of stay. Ever so slightly removed to just above the port of Portofino, it is still close and easily reached, just slightly up the hill to give it elevated status. And views.
As you would expect from a Belmond hotel the service is flawless, and as expected from Italians the service is also friendly. Something you notice immediately as you step out of the car and onto the floral terrace and are greeted with warm and sincere smiles.
My room was inviting with quiet style and comfortable furnishings leading to a large floral covered terrace with views of the sea and Portofino. Definitely a view enjoyed with champagne which I promptly did. Bathrooms were generously provided with Acqua di Parma bath products both by the sink and in the large shower with rainshower head.
After a pause I went exploring the hotel which is simply gorgeous with artistic touched everywhere. Such attention to detail, there isn’t a view that isn’t framed by flowers, of a corridor that isn’t decorated, it embodies prettiness in the most delightful way. The terrace is lined with wisteria vines, potted lemon trees, and views over the sea. The restaurant is old world elegance when dining inside, and romantic sea views outside. The menu is up market local fare plated with more artistic detail. There are spa facilities, abounding gardens, and a pool overlooking the sea.
When you do decide to leave the comfort of the Splendido, getting to Portofino is very easy with the hotel’s regular shuttle service from the hotel to the centre of Portofino -and back again. Though should you walk it is not far and a comfortable 10 minute walk down through the gardens and then to a footpath alongside the sea. Should you feel more adventurous the hotel is happy to set up excursions to nearby towns such as the Cinque Terre, Portovenere, Camogli, and even to Genoa.
I really enjoyed my Spring stay at the Splenido. It was nice to relax at the hotel then be able to go into charming Portofino close by for a pleasant walk around, not to mention some nice lunch and dinners. But the hotel absolutely made my stay. What a lovely place to be, charming people, attentive service, and just a wonderful backdrop for my dolce far niente mood.
Please note I paid for my own stay, and this review is based on my own personal experience staying at the hotel.
