Rooms with Views – Le Sirenuse

Having won every travel award out there, my expectations for my stay at the Le Sirenuse were very high. I knew it would be gorgeous that the service should be very good, but there are hotel stays and there are hotel experiences, and I really wanted Le Sirenuse to be exceptional. The hotel with the best views of Positano, with bougainvillea terraces, and sea breezes, not only met those expectations but surpassed them. They had me at “Ciao!” so to speak, or more precisely at “Bienvenuta!”

Agata at the concierge desk not only checked me in and gave me the grand tour, but became almost my personal concierge throughout my stay. While all concierges at the desk were friendly and quick to help, it was a more personal experience to deal with one in particular on a regular basis, and Agata was a wonderful guide during my whole stay. Grazie mille Agata!

The hotel is more of a large house, it is comfortable, relaxed, yet elegant. Set on many levels and terraces cascading down the mountain like that of a private villa in the sky. Saying it is breathtaking does not do it justice as every detail in the hotel feels quite special and even a bit magical. From ivy hanging from the ceiling of the reception hall, to candle lit public spaces it gives a quiet sense of drama without it being showy or flashy. My room felt more like a guest bedroom in a friend’s house and less like hotel accommodation which made me feel right at home. The decor had more of a modern comfort then a fussy antique feel to it which again reflects the comfortable elegance of the hotel itself. The bathroom’s were of course top of the line with a large jacuzzi bathtub and a selection of scents and bath products from the hotel’s own well known lemony fragrance “Eau d’Italie.” And the view… the view! from my room was spectacular! I had Positano and its famous domed church at my feet! I sat out on the balcony every time I could and in the afternoons listened to the church bells ring.

The property boasts a Michelin stared restaurant La Sponda which  of course has impeccable service to go with the polished regional menu. You walk in at night and is lit up by hundreds of small candles with vines and flowers cascading down the walls and ceiling. An absolutely delightful dining experience. Impressive wine list with a even more impressive sommelier who gave spot on recommendations, while the waiters served the delectable cuisine like a well rehearsed dance. Everything felt formal but not stiff. And the mood was very lighthearted which was applied in every way from the service to every detail on the plate.

The hotel includes a terrace bar, and for pre-dinner cocktail hours, a champagne and oyster bar. There is a small, yet luxurious spa on the premises, that is if you can pull yourself away to use it. Across the street from the hotel are two hotel boutiques selling luxury Italian housewears like Carlo Moretti glass, and embroidered pillowcases, along with many fashion pieces, in case you forgot your swimsuit. The pool is small and the seating near it is limited, but it is very pretty being located on the flower covered terrace. And of course everything has astonishing views of the azure sea below.

Yet with all the beauty of the property, what made the stay one of the best hotel experiences I have ever encountered was the friendly and professional staff. Everyone greeted me by name, they were always smiling, and met every request with a positive response. They were near enough to attend to every need without being on top of you or oppressive. On a breezy night on the terrace they brought me a pashmina to wrap myself in, breakfast in the mornings they knew my favourite place to sit, they knew my choices of beverages without my asking, and all these things made me feel at home and well looked after. I have never had a more enjoyable stay anywhere. I can’t wait to go back and hear them say, Bienvenuta! because it will feel like they really mean it.

Pros: The loveliest place on earth! Exceptional service, you won’t find better anywhere. Great views, and wonderful in house facilities.

Cons: You won’t want to leave.

Extras: The hotel has its own boat which you can book for a tour up the coast.
