Insiders Guide: Amalfi Coast

DO

Hire a car and driver or taxi, to take you around. They not only know how to maneuver the hairpin turns but understand the difficult traffic problems that arise in getting around the towns. Plus they worry about the parking!

Check out the small towns as well. You meet really lovely people and the towns are real gems.

Go see Duomo di Amalfi in the town of Amalfi. Such a gorgeous church with vaulted cloisters and a golden vault below.

… while in Amalfi… don’t miss the fountain in the piazza and make sure to have coffee and pastries at Pasticceria Pansa also right on the square. Its a wonderful grand caffe.

Ravello is an elegant hilltown with two exceptional yet different villas that are not to be missed: Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Both with gardens and breathtaking views overlooking the sea.

All life leads to the beach in Positano but do visit the little piazza in front of the church of Santa Maria Assunta. It has whimsical decorative mosaics all around the little square.

Buy a pair of hand made sandals at Don Catello in Positano. They make a very stylish souvenir!

DRINK

For romantic views of Positano at sunset you can’t beat drinks on the patio at Il San Pietro. Their signature drink is a luscious Bellini.

The Bar at Le Sirenuse serves the finest drinks in the area and has an exciting cocktail menu. Try the Positano martini made with almond liqueur or the house specialty, the lemony Sirenuse martini. Also check out their Champagne and Oyster Bar for aperitivo.

La Pergola on the beach of Positano for a bit of lively atmosphere.

DINE

Il Ritrovo in the small village of Montepertuso in the hills overlooking Positano is a delightful family run restaurant serving regional fare and good down home cooking. Casual, country place and some of the best meals anywhere. There is a free shuttle to take you between Positano and the restaurant.

Ristorante Il San Pietro at the hotel gives you views over the ocean and elegant nouvelle regional cuisine. Dishes are sophisticated yet unpretentious the wine list superb. An exceptional dinning experience.

Equally elegant is the restaurant at Le Sirenuse Hotel, La Sponda which offers a modern take on local cuisine such as spaghetti with calamari sauce and an extensive wine list to go with such impressive dishes. All in a magical setting of a dinning room lit up by hundreds of tea candles and cascading with ivy. As expected excellent and very attentive service.

For a bit of cooking like la Nonna used to make then head to Ravello and Cumpa Cosimo where Netta will cook for you. A bit of a legend now, she comes by your table and says hello and then goes in the back and works in the kitchen. Hearty meals and traditional favourites are all on the menu.
